National Indoor titles for Mawdsley and Rochford
There was double success for Tipperary athletes at the National Senior Indoor Track & Field Championships took place last weekend at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in Abbottstown last weekend.
International runner Sharlene Mawdsley of Newport Athletic Club cruised to the 200m title in a time of 24.05 seconds on Saturday, a race which also saw Katie Bergin of Moyne Athletic Club reach the final where she came home sixth in 25.52.
The second gold came in the Women’s High Jump where Ava Rochford of Nenagh Olympic AC won with a height of 1.78m, while clubmate Ellen O’Dwyer finished seventh with 1.60.
The Nenagh Olympic AC Men’s 4x200m Relay team of Paul White, Jack Hickey, Joseph Miniter and Padraic Hassett won silver medals in a time of 1.29.87.
Elsewhere, beginning in the men’s 200m, heat 2 had Alex Ryan of Dundrum AC who finished fourth in 23.79, while in heat 7, Lewis Doyle of Nenagh Olympic AC was third in 23.90. Heat 9 saw Padraic Hassett of Nenagh Olympic AC win in 22.36 while in the same heat Liam Meade of Templemore AC finished fourth in a time of 23.82.
In the Men’s 400m, heat 3 had Brendan Lynch of Nenagh Olympic AC came home third in 51.54, while in heat 6, Paul White of Nenagh Olympic AC won in 49.39. Heat 7 had David Ryan of Moycarkey Coolcroo also coming home first in 48.86 which qualified him for the final. In the same heat, Jack Hickey of Nenagh Olympic AC was fourth in 53.14. In the final, David Ryan finished sixth in 48.34.
Other Results: Men’s 60m - heat 3, Joseph Miniter of Nenagh Olympic AC finished third in 7.22 and qualified for the semi-final. Heat 4 saw Alex Ryan of Dundrum AC finish eighth in 17.43. Heat 7 had Padraic Hassett of Nenagh Olympic AC place fourth in 7.09 and qualify for the semi-finals where Padraic Hassett was fifth in 7.08, and Joseph Miniter sixth in 7.16.
Women’s 200m - heat 2 saw Katie Bergin of Moyne AC finish in sixth place in 7.94.
Men’s 1500m - heat 2 had Robert Kennedy of Templemore AC finish sixth in 4.09.31.
Men’s 3000m - heat 1 James Tanner of Nenagh Olympic AC finished 12th in 8.57.65.
Men’s Long Jump - Joseph Miniter of Nenagh Olympic AC finished sixth with a jump of 6.81m.
Men’s Shot Putt 7.26kg - Mark Tierney of Nenagh Olympic AC finished seventh with a throw of 10.04m.
Women’s Pole Vault - Ava Rochford of Nenagh Olympic AC finished fourth with a height of 3.20m while Jodie McGrath, also of Nenagh Olympic AC, finished in sixth with a leap of 2.90m.
Women’s Triple Jump - Grace Fitzgerald of Tipperary Town AC was fourth with a jump of 11.07m while Lucy Fitzgerald of Tipperary Town AC was fifth with a jump of 10.79m.
Men’s Pole Vault - Ben Connolly of Nenagh Olympic AC was seventh with a height of 4.15.
Men’s Weight for Distance 56lbs - Larry O’Grady of Mooreabbey Milers AC was fifth with 5.27.
Women’s 4x200m Relay - Moyne AC team of Leona Maher, Katie Bergin, Lucy Doyle & Aisling Dwyer were fifth in 1.50.84.
