Contest time for Nenagh Toastmasters

March and April are special months for Nenagh Toastmasters because it is contest time.

On March 29 we had our club contest for International Speech and a contest for Evaluating a speech.

The participants for the speech competition each prepared an original speech, which was assessed separately by four-five judges, whose decisions on placings are combined to declare the winners.

We had six speeches on the night, each of very high standard and the judges must have had a difficult time making their decisions. The participants were Margaret Hennessy, Danny Doyle, John Leinster, Joe Ryan, Brendan O’Brien and Tony Spain. The results were -

First place: Brendan O’Brien

Second place: Margaret Hennessy

Third place: Tony Spain

Brendan O’Brien and Margaret Hennessy went on to represent the Nenagh club in the Area Final on April 9. This involves the winners from five clubs in the Mid West area. Margaret Hennessy was the winner in the Area contest. This is a wonderful achievement.

In the Club Evaluation Contest, the contestants all listen to a speech by someone from outside the club and they are given five minutes to prepare their notes. One by one they give their three-minute evaluation and they are judged on that. Contestants do not hear the other evaluations until they have delivered their own first.

The participants were Brendan O’Brien, Eileen Kennedy, Joe Ryan and Tony Spain. Liam Quinn, from the Thomond Club in Limerick, gave the sample speech.

The results were -

First place: Joe Ryan

Second place: Brendan O’Brien

Joe and Brendan went forward to the Area Contest representing Nenagh and Brendan O’Brien won the Area Contest. A great achievement for the club to win both the Speech and Evaluation Area Contests.

The winners, Margaret Hennessy and Brendan O’Brien will now take part in the Division Contest on April 30. This will happen by Zoom and anyone wishing to watch can connect by registering online through www.d71toastmasters.org. Look up the events calendar for April 30 and register. Our next club meeting is a regular meeting on April 26 at 8.15pm at the Abbey Court Hotel. We look forward to seeing you there.
