Tipp overcome Waterford to set-up Munster semi-final

Waterford1-8

Tipperary2-13

By Shane Brophy

Tipperary overcame a fast Waterford start to progress to the Munster senior football semi-final after a comfortable win in Dungarvan last evening.

The home side were fast out of the blocks and an early Dermot Ryan point was added to by a Jason Curry penalty on five minutes after James Walsh was fouled.

Slowly Tipp warmed to the task and gradually took over at midfield where Jack Kennedy kicked two fine points from play and the sides were level on 26 minutes when Tipp also goaled from a penalty through Conor Sweeney, after Sean O’Connor was impeded in the square. A brace of points from Mikey O’Shea and an O’Connor free gave Tipp a 1-8 to 1-2 half time advantage.

Ryan and Curry again got Waterford off to a brisk start after the break as the gap was cut to four as the home side pressed Tipp hard but just five minutes after coming on for his first appearance of the season after injury, Steven O’Brien scored a superb individual goal soloing fifty yards before firing to the net.

It was the score which took away any hope for Waterford as Tipp pushed on for an eight point win with Sean O’Connor and Mikey O’Shea having impressive debuts with three points from play each.

Tipperary will play Limerick in the Munster semi-final in Thurles on Saturday 14 May after the Shannonsiders defeated Clare on penalties in their quarter final.
