Munster Senior Hurling Championship

Our senior hurlers played Cork last Sunday in FBD Semple Stadium in their final group game of this year’s Munster championship and unfortunately it was the visitors who emerged victorious on the day, therefore ending our involvement in this year’s championship.

While it is disappointing to be out of the championship at this point, we must all acknowledge the hard work and commitment of players and management alike. There was no one more disappointed after last Sunday’s game than the players and team management and what they now need from everyone is support and encouragement rather than criticism. We thank all involved with our senior hurling team and we look forward to what the future brings for our county at this level.

Tailteann Cup

Netwatch Cullen Park will be the venue this Sunday when our senior footballers will take on Carlow in their opening game of the inaugural Tailteann Cup at 2.00pm. Since their exit from the Munster championship, the players have regrouped and are now fully focused on this game which once again will be a stiff test for the team but one I am sure they will be well able for. Tickets for this game are now available to purchase via the GAA website.

Munster Minor Football Championship

Commiserations to our Minor footballers who were defeated by Cork in the Munster semi-final last Thursday in FBD Semple Stadium.

While the result was not what we would have hoped for, The players have given us all a lot to be proud of and indeed a lot to be positive about going forward. Thanks to all the players who were involved with this year’s panel you have all done your county and clubs proud both on and off the field. Thanks also to team manager John McNamara and his management team who have all put in an unbelievable effort this year and have played a huge part in growing and developing this group of players.

FBD Insurance County Leagues

WE are at the semi-final stage in all the FBD Insurance County Hurling Leagues, and these games will take place over the course of the coming weekend and the early days of next week. See GAA Scoreboard for fixtures.

Coaching & Games Development

Well done to all the schools who took part in Tipperary Coaching & Games County Skills competition. Congrats to St Marys Primary School Nenagh and Scoil Naomh Cualán Borrisoleigh on winning the hurling and football. Both competitions were of very high standard with St Mary’s winning the football in a playoff with Killea NS and the Borrisoleigh boys just shading it over Little Flower NS, Ballytarsna. Thanks to all who made this a huge success especially the TY students from C.B.S. Thurles who were a great help. Best of luck to St Mary’s and Scoil Naomh Cualán who go on to represent Tipperary in Munster.

Bryan O’Mara named Electric Ireland GAA Higher Education Rising Star Hurler of the Year

Electric Ireland and the GAA Higher Education Committee have announced that University of Limerick duo David Clifford and Bryan O’Mara as GAA Higher Education Rising Star Football and Hurling Players of the Year 2022.

O’Mara, who was Man of the Match in the Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup Final, was outstanding over the course of UL’s journey to the Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup final. The Tipperary man also scored four points in the final as UL lifted the trophy for the first time since 2018.

Clifford, an Electric Ireland Minor Star award winner in 2017, was phenomenal throughout the Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup, scoring six goals and 22 points in six Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup matches, as UL made it all the way to the final, for only the second time in the university’s history.

The Rising Star awards for Clifford and O’Mara follow on their selection on the Electric Ireland GAA Higher Education Rising Star Football and Hurling Teams of the Year in March. The Rising Star Football Team of the Year 2022 included DCU DÉ player, Red Óg Murphy, who tragically passed away in April. Red Óg Murphy was a stalwart of DCU DÉ’s midfield and his skill and flair were evident throughout the Sigerson Cup in 2022 as DCU DÉ reached the semi-finals of the competition.

Congratulating David Clifford and Bryan O’Mara, Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy said: “The intent and dedication both David and Bryan showed over the course of the Electric Ireland Sigerson & Fitzgibbon Cups is a true sign of how important these competitions are to the players and the GAA. These competitions were a brilliant way to begin the year and I would like to congratulate all of those involved who were named in the Team of the Year in March. I would also like to extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Red Óg Murphy. Red Óg was a standout performer for DCU DÉ during this year’s Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup and his untimely death has been felt by all in the GAA family”.
