Parking issues in Killaloe

Over the past week on a number of occasions, access to the Killaloe Coast Guard station at the Pier Head has been blocked by cars and was completely inaccessible for the unit’s crews responding to emergency calls. ‘No parking’ signs have also been removed from the walls.

The Coast Guard request that all people using the facilities at the Pier Head keep the access to the Coast Guard station clear and to bear in mind that in the event of a callout, the crew will be towing a rescue boat.

Parking is also an issue at the Two-Mile-Gate where Killaloe gardaí are appealing to all motorists to park safely and with consideration for other road-users. Please respect the ‘no parking’ areas where cones are in place. If necessary, tickets will be issued for parking offences where vehicles are causing an obstruction or parked in a dangerous manner.

Killaloe Coast Guards Callouts

On Thursday last, August 11, Killaloe Coast Guard unit was tasked at 5.20pm to assist a 40-foot boat that had run aground at the entrance to the Scariff River. The vessel with three persons on board experienced engine difficulty as a result of the incident. A crew member was transferred to the causality vessel and carried out an assessment to ensure that it was not damaged. The vessel was then taken on tow out to deep water and escorted into Mountshannon Harbour where a shore team assisted with the safe mooring of the vessel. The unit was stood down at 7.20pm and returned to base.

At 7.30pm on Saturday, August 13, Killaloe Coast Guard unit and R115 were tasked to a swimmer in difficulty at the Two-Mile-Gate. Members of Killaloe gardaí were first on the scene and reported that a man was struggling to stay afloat. When Rescue 115 arrived on the scene, Killaloe Coast Guard ‘rib’ was directed to the location of the swimmer, between the Two-Mile-Gate and UL Activity centre. The person was taken on board the rescue boat and transported to the pier at the Two-Mile-Gate where a shore team from the unit, the gardaí and the National Ambulance Service offered assistance to the casualty. R115 was then stood down and since the person did not require medical assistance, all units were stood down and returned to base.
