Tipperary benefits from funding for outdoor recreation

Clare Glens River Walk among local projects

Local councillors John Carroll and Fiona Bonfield have joined TD Jackie Cahill in welcoming more than €321,884 for outdoor adventure projects in Tipperary.

The Government’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme includes funding for several local projects, including the Adventure Lough Derg app, Ballinderry River Walk, Clare Glens River Walk, Tipperary Angling, and a voluntary cycling initiative for Nenagh (see full list with details below). Ten projects in County Tipperary will receive a total grant-aid of €321,884.

“These projects will enhance existing outdoor recreation facilities and help to develop new amenities, which will be an important resource for local communities and visitors to our region,” Deputy Cahill stated. “Easy access to outdoor amenities in every community is beneficial for all age groups.”

The Tipperary Fianna Fáil TD added: “I compliment Tipperary County Council and the efforts of those who have worked together to bring these projects to this stage. The commitment of local community groups throughout is critical to the success of this scheme.”

Labour councillor Fiona Bonfield was particularly delighted that the application under ORIS funding made by Tipperary County Council for the Clare Glens was successful in securing funding. A total of €48,600 has been secured to plan and design an improvement to the walkway on the Tipperary side. This follows on from funding that Limerick County Council secured last year to develop the car park facility on the Limerick side.

Cllr Bonfield added: “I’m thrilled for the region that this walkway has secured this funding to implement a plan and a design for improvements. This amenity is used by many and is a very scenic natural walkway.”

Fianna Fáil councillor John Carroll welcomed all of the projects in the Nenagh district, in particular those around Lough Derg and the Adventure Lough Derg app. Cllr Carroll said the funding would be used to promote our amenities to local people and visitors alike. This should provide a welcome boost to the local district, he said.
