Munster Tennis titles for Nenagh, Puckane and Roscrea

Nenagh’s bid for a third Munster Senior Cup title at Douglas last weekend was unsuccessful despite a brave team performance against Rushbrooke, one of the aristocrats of Munster Tennis.

Rushbrooke won the very first Munster Senior Cup back in 1907 and are probably at the top of the leader board in terms of titles won, but Nenagh players these days are not overawed by their opposition and while ultimate success eluded them on this occasion, they will undoubtedly be back. Nenagh’s team was Anne-Marie Darcy, Helena Darcy, Eamonn Murtagh and James Morris.

Nenagh LTC did however have a successful weekend at the finals which took place in Douglas. Nenagh won the Grades 4 and 5 Mixed titles. At Grade 4, Paul Dillon (Capt), Colin Ryan, Margaret Slattery and Libby Darcy teamed up to defeat Whitechurch, and at Grade 5, Margaret O’Meara, Emma O’Connor, Justin Conroy and Diarmuid Gleeson defeated Rushbrooke.

Nenagh’s Grade 2 team (Kieran Slattery, Philip O’Gorman, Richelle Treacy and Paula Kelly) were out of luck in the Grade 2 (also known at the Intermediate Cup) final, losing 2/3 to Douglas.

Overall though it was a very satisfying weekend for the Nenagh club. The club appeared in four of the sixteen finals and won two of them. And while likely disappointed to lose the Grades 1 and 2 finals, it speaks highly of the playing standards in the club that it was appearing in 2 of the major club finals in the province.

Congratulations to Puckane & District Tennis Club who won the Grade 6 Mixed team title at Douglas on Saturday.

Roscrea lost 1/3 to Ennis in the Grade 4 (Keane Cup) ladies final. A great team performance here, all matches going the three sets. Roscrea’s team was Carmel Hilliard, Teresa O’Neill, Juliana Slattery and Margaret Feeney.

Open Days: The Nenagh club will be running another series of open nights on Monday’s 10th & 17th October. Further details here on later Guardians, and on Facebook.

Catholic Institute Open Doubles: Nenagh players did well at the Limerick Open Doubles at Cath Inst last week. Nenagh combinations Philip O’Gorman/Frank O’Keeffe and Claire McGrath/Aoife Darcy won their respective grades. Tara Hackett (with Emily O’Donoghue) and Deirdre Hogan (with Aoife Wixted) also won events. James Morris/Matthew Ryan, Tanya Beattie/Brid Morgan and Cathal Hanrahan/John Minogue were finalists in their respective grades.

Munster Summer Cup: Many congratulations to our Grade 6 Mixed team of Albert Kelly (Capt), Sinead Hogan, Barry Creamer, and Celine Connors, who won their finals (4-0) in the Summer Cup against Garryduff last Saturday.

This is a fantastic achievement by the team, who through hard work and commitment have brought home the Cup. It is only the fifth time in our club's history that this has been achieved and all members are now celebrating, inspired for next year. Thank you to the team.... you have done yourselves and us proud!
