End of an era: Mid-west Post Office to close

Limerick Fine Gael Kieran O’Donnell TD, has expressed his great disappointment with the announcement from An Post that the current Castleconnell Post Office will be closing on this coming Friday, October 21, at 4.30pm. This follows the closure of the same post office for a week in April of this year before being re-opened. Deputy O’Donnell is working with his Castleconnell-based colleague Cllr Michael Murphy to secure the firm future of the Castleconnell Post Office.

“I know how important Castleconnell Post office is to the people of the village and surrounding areas and I am working with my Castleconnell based colleague, Cllr Michael Murphy to firmly secure its future.

“I have already held extensive discussions with Angus Laverty Public Affairs Manager, An Post aimed at firmly securing the future of the Post Office in Castleconnell. He has confirmed to me that An Post are fully committed to providing a Post office located in Castleconnell village and that they are actively working to appoint a new contractor to provide an post services here.

“Furthermore, I have asked an Post that until they have a new an post contractor is in place, that they would continue to maintain the operation of the current post office and I will be holding further talks with An Post today on this matter. The pending closure on this coming Friday 21st October will cause a great degree worry, anxiety and serious inconvenience to people who collect their payments at Castleconnell Post Office as well as the other range of services it offers to the local public.

“This follows the temporary closure of this Post office last April for a week, after which people of the Castleconnell area thought the future of their post office was secure. It is critical that an Post now ensure that Castleconnell Post Office’s future is firmly made secure.

“As it stands, An Post further advised that until a new contactor is appointed to operate Castleconnell Post office, they propose transferring customers to the post office at Newport Post Office on a temporary basis. Whilst I am working to try and maintain the current post office in Castleconnell to continue to operate until a new an post contractor is in place, nevertheless, if temporary closure arises on Friday, I have asked that customers be facilitated to transfer to any an Post office of their choice, which might suit them better in the short-term until the new an post contractor is in place for Castleconnell.

“I will continue to work with all to ensure the future of Castleconnell Post Office Post Office is firmly secured.
