Nenagh hit Annacotty for five in Munster shock

The shock of the day in Sunday’s Munster Junior Cup third round games saw Nenagh AFC turn in their best performance in years to hit a fancied Aisling Annacotty for five goals without reply in Annacotty on Sunday morning.

Nenagh went down to Pike Rovers in the FAI Junior Cup the previous weekend, but anyone at the game could see that with a little self-belief the outcome could have been different.

Well on Sunday, that self-belief was there in droves as they overran a star-studded Aisling side sitting pretty in second spot in the Premier League. While it was an all-around impressive outing for the Tipperary side, special mention must go to man of the match, Alan Sheehan, who was brilliant throughout.

Nenagh took the lead when Adam Ryan’s free kick fell kindly in the box for Eamonn White and he volleyed home.

Nenagh’s second was a wonder goal. A poor clearance fell to Ryan Gilmartin 35 yards out and he hit an unstoppable first time shot that gave John Mulready no chance in the home goal as it nestled in the top corner.

It got even better for Nenagh before half time when good interplay down the left ended with Aidan White being denied by a fine save from Mulready, but Alan Sheehan followed up to head home the rebound. Aisling’s comeback after the restart never materialized as Nenagh tacked on a fourth when more excellent work by Sheehan saw him pick out Aidan White who slotted home coolly. Nenagh put the icing on the cake when a quick change of play saw Lee Mowat square for Matthew Spain to put tuck away to complete a memorable day.

League

Following Mungret Regional’s 3-2 win over Nenagh in the Premier League, it transpired that the winners had fielded an illegal player and as a result Nenagh were awarded the points on a 3-0 scoreline.

In the Premier ‘A’ League, Newport moved top of the table after a 3-0 win at Murroe.

Jay Ryan opened the scoring when he got in head of the home keeper to fire home. The same player doubled the lead when he volleyed in from Christy Doyle’s pass on 75 minutes. Pa Murtagh completed the scoring for the Tipperary side when he breezed past a number of challenges before firing home.

Youth

In the Munster Youth Cup, Ciaran Carey netted for Newport Town but goals from Adam Kearney and Senan Quinn gave Aisling Annacotty ‘A’ a 2-1 win.
