Club celebrates 30th anniversary
Celebrations for Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club
A Cold and wind-swept Portroe Dive Centre was brought warmth with Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club's 30th anniversary celebration last Saturday.
Present club members were joined by several former members for the occasion, which included an underwater treasure hunt. Divers retrieved tokens hidden in the flooded slate quarry and these were exchanged for prizes in a draw afterwards. The event was also marked with the placing of inscribed slates at depths of 10, 20 and 30 metres in the quarry.
Hot food was then served as those present reminisced on club activities over the last 30 years. Current chairman Simon O'Duffy read out a couple of extracts from Nenagh Guardian articles from the club's early days. Brian Donnelly took the opportunity to highlight a standout achievement earlier this year when Stephen Smyth became the first member of Lough Derg SAC to attain the Moniteur Three-Star grade. Michael Hogan, a member of the club since its foundation in the autumn of 1992, asked those gathered to think of members that have sadly passed away over the years, including Rickard Deasy and Bobby Cullinane.
A big thanks to everyone who came along and helped out on the day, including Piotr and Michael of Portroe Dive Centre.
Lough Derg SAC is presently comprised of 25 members. The club offers training in scuba diving and snorkelling, and organises excursions all over Ireland and abroad. It also provides a voluntary search & recovery service in the local area and nationally.
