Busy week for Coast Guard

The last week of October has been a busy one for the volunteers at Killaloe Coast Guard unit, who were active on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The unit responded on Wednesday evening to assist in the search for an 83-year-old man, who went missing from his home in Newtown, Nenagh, earlier in the day. Searches were carried out overnight and into Thursday morning, which led to a successful outcome on Thursday evening.

An Garda Síochána would like to thank the public and media for their assistance after Jim Carey was found safe and well following the search operation in the Newtown area.

The search involved the gardaí, Killaloe Coast Guard and a rescue helicopter. Tipperary Search and Rescue, the Civil Defence drone unit and the Search and Rescue Dog Association also joined the search, along with local sports clubs, community groups and volunteers. Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club’s Search & Recovery unit and the Dromineer-based RNLI also offered assistance.

The search operation was based at Burgess GAA field. People in the Newtown, Hogan’s Pass and Kilcolman areas were asked to check CCTV or dash-cam footage.

Once located, members of Killaloe Coast Guard and Tipperary Search and Rescue worked together to transport the gentleman to the awaiting R117 where he was then airlifted to hospital for treatment. Well done to all involved. The Coast Guard would like to thank everyone who helped with the search operation, including those who provided food and refreshments throughout the search period.

On Saturday evening at 6.45pm, the local unit was tasked to assist a vessel stuck under Killaloe Bridge in strong currents. Due to the location of the vessel, it was decided that the unit's D-class rescue boat would launch at Ballina slipway and approach the vessel from south of the bridge. The skipper on board was unharmed and the vessel was not damaged in the incident. A Coast Guard shore team also responded from the Pier Head to assist the boat crew if needed. At 7.45pm the vessel was successfully removed from under the bridge and the unit was stood down and returned to base.

AN Garda Síochána would like to thank the public and media for their assistance after a missing man was found safe and well following a major search operation in the Newtown area last week.
