The late Joss Lowry was the epitome of a team player when he played rugby for Ballina-Killaloe.

Death of a great community activist - Joss Lowry of Killaloe

Killaloe-Ballina has lost a great community activist following the recent death of Joss Lowry, Killestry, Killaloe. Joss was hugely involved in sporting clubs, community projects and fundraising events for over four decades and will be sorely missed throughout the entire district

Since making Killaloe his permanent home in 1980, Joss Lowry became actively involved in all activities in the district. His first commitment was to the Ballina-Killaloe Rugby club where he became a fixture in the front row, the epitome of a team player and a totally committed clubman. He was a member of the club’s most successful team that won multiple trophies including the Webb Cup in the 1980-’81 season. Subsequently, he served as an outstanding administrator with the old club, holding the offices of treasurer and president at different times and, he served as a committee member during the club’s new incarnation.

Joss was involved in Clarisford Park from the very beginning and actively contributed to the project through his role as Secretary/Director from its inception to the present day. Without his input, the park simply would not be what it is today. He was hugely involved with Smith O’Brien GAA club at all levels and served as registrar and member of the executive committee for many years. Joss was particularly proud of his work in creating the club’s first Constitution. He was also Chairperson and co-founder of Kincora Kids Community Creche where his legacy will live on through all the children who will continue to benefit from this facility in the community.

Joss Lowry was a great friend to Milford Hospice and each year co-ordinated the Milford Sunflower fundraising weekend. He was also involved in the local Darkness into Light event and the Cycle against Suicide. Indeed, he was a true community activist and the people of Killaloe-Ballina will be the poorer for his passing.
