Gaelscoil Aonach up for prestigious award
There was great excitement in Rang 5 in Gaelscoil Aonach recently when they were chosen as one of three primary schools for the finals of the competition My EU50. Múinteoir Máire de Loinge was thrilled that the class project on Denmark was chosen as there were over 5,000 entrants in the competition. In the coming year, Ireland will celebrate 50 years of membership of The European Union. Denmark being the featured choice, the Danish ambassador along with Minister Thomas Byrne and Israel Olatunde were in attendance at the awards ceremony in Iveagh House, Dublin too.
The pupils of Fifth Class produced a rap song on Denmark. The Nenagh primary school received €500 and a commemorative trophy at the ceremony in Dublin featuring Reem El-Hassany from RTÉ News2day and Israel Olatunde, Ireland’s fastest man.
Minister of State Byrne said: “Every school that participated in the MyEU50 youth competition deserves to be commended for their participation and their engagement in EU affairs. I would like to congratulate the winners on their superb entries which presented unique and creative takes on EU membership from the perspective of young people.”
MyEU50 is an initiative of the Government of Ireland, led by the Department of Foreign Affairs and managed by European Movement Ireland to mark the 50th anniversary of Ireland’s EU membership. Noelle O Connell, CEO of European Movement Ireland, added: “We have been very impressed by the broad range of issues presented in the entries, covering all aspects of live in the European Union, across the Member States.”
