Local history book launch at Nenagh Library

On Tuesday, January 17, at 6.30pm, Nenagh Library oversees the launch of local history book ‘Nursing and Midwifery in the poor-law Unions of Borrisokane and Nenagh, 1882 – 1922’.

Written by Lisa McGeeney, a registered nurse, midwife and public health nurse, who received her Master’s degree in Local History from University of Limerick in 2020, the book examines the development of nursing and midwifery at the end 19th century up until the early part of the 20th century.

Looking at the Poor-Law Unions in Nenagh and Borrisokane to see the differences between those nurses and midwives who were professionally trained and those who were untrained, it allows us to trace the development of professionalism in nursing and midwifery in these areas.

Guest speaker on the night will be John Joe Conwell (MA, Local History), who headed up the University of Limerick's Certificate in Local History course. This talk should be of interest not only to local historians and second level students studying history for their Leaving Cert, but also to those members of the general public with an interest in the history of their home place.
