Hogan causes upset at Cork
While earlier results had been very favourable for punters, the Mark Cahill-trained Hinemoa bucked the trend with a narrow success in the opening division of the 12-furlong handicap at Dundalk on Wednesday.
At odds of 25/1, the seven-year-old, owned and bred by Frank McNulty, led at the two-furlong pole and battled well to see off the Luke Comer-trained Angel In The Sky by a head under Alan Persse.
Clonmel’s Sean Bowen landed the second division of the seven-furlong handicap on the Denis Hogan-trained Bronze River at Dundalk on Friday. In the colours of the Premier Racing Club, the 10/1 chance had an easy time of it as he beat the Pat Martin-trained Indiana Grey by two lengths.
Denis Hogan was responsible for the shock of the day at Cork on Saturday as he landed the opening two-mile maiden hurdle with 20/1 chance Action Motion. The Daniel King-ridden four-year-old got the better of the Willie Mullins-trained odds-on favourite Alastor by half a length in the colours of the Premier Racing Club.
The champion trainer again lost out as the Rachael Blackmore-ridden Telmesomethinggirl scored her first success since winning the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival when landing the mares’ beginners’ chase at Naas on Sunday.
Trained for owner Kenny Alexander by Henry de Bromhead, the 5/4 chance was far from perfect at her fences but she dug deepest from the final fence to get the better of the front-running Willie Mullins-trained favourite Instit by six lengths.
Edward O'Grady won the two-mile handicap chase with Shakeytry, a well-supported 3/1 chance. In the colours of the Glebeland Farm Partnership, the eleven-year-old raced clear from the final fence under Phillip Enright to score by eight lengths from the Ted Walsh-trained Kildorrery.
