Busy weekend of action for Nenagh Hockey Club
Under 8 & 10: Thurles Hockey Club hosted a blitz for the U10 and U8 teams which gave all the players an opportunity to play in the Ursuline 2G surface and show off their skills.
Under 12: On Saturday, the Under 12 team travelled to Ennis to play in a blitz against Ennis Cashel/New Inn, Limerick UL and Belvedere Hockey clubs. The team played extremely well and showed some great skill and teamwork throughout the blitz.
Under 16: Later that day Nenagh’s Under 16 team, currently top of the league, played Cork CofI at home in Thurles. Having won two of their previous encounters Nenagh were confident going into the match. However, a lapse in concentration saw Nenagh leak and early soft goal. Nenagh rallied after the surprise and quickly evened the score. The back of the goal remained elusive for the rest of the match, despite Nenagh having the majority of the possession. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. Nenagh remain comfortable at the top for the table with a break of a few weeks until the next game on February 25th against Limerick Hockey Club.
Under 14: Sunday saw Under 14 league action with Nenagh's Eagles team traveling to Bandon to take on Kinsale in a blitz format game. Perhaps due to the long commute and the delay in tip-off, the Eagles were slow to get into the game and let Kinsale through for an early goal. Nenagh answered with swiftly with a goal but the game was tight at half time. Nenagh settled in the second half and poached another goal. The match ended 2-1.
The second game saw Nenagh settle into the task and start to show their class with goals from all the forwards giving a comfortable lead. Wet and miserable conditions didn't hold the team back as they relaxed into the second game and scored some nice goals. Aoibhe McAndrew in particular ran in a goal from deep, beating all defenders with her skill and pace. Nenagh pulled away with an impressive final score of 7-0.
Next weekend sees Nenagh in action yet again when the U14 Ospreys travel to Belvedere in a double header against Belvedere and Midleton.
