Thurles Parkinson's Support Group of Parkinson's Association of Ireland hold their next information meeting on Thursday, March 2, in Order of Malta Centre, Thurles commencing at 2pm. Special guest speaker is Mags Richardson, Parkinson's Nurse Specialist based at University Hospital Limerick.

It is well worth your time to attend the meeting as the Parkinson's Nurse Specialist deals specifically around disease management and the education of patients, carers and professionals. Nurse specialists are ideally placed to help with the problems the disease can present.

The role of the nurse is diverse and can include the following a major role in educating, emotional and lifestyle counselling and information services, issues such as quality of life, self-esteem and goal setting with families. Parkinson's is a complicated condition and no two people will experience the condition in quite the same way.

Treatment is also individual and medication has to titrated to suit the particular needs of each person. Parkinson's is a complex, chronic incurable and disabling disease. It effects can be mitigated by timely interventions from a range of health agencies.

Although often considered to be a disease of older people, the condition is not confined to older people. The average age is now under 50 years of age.
