Tusla is aiming to recruit new foster carers from all walks of life to meet the growing demand for placements.

Tusla seeking foster carers in Tipp

Tusla - Child and Family Agency today launched Foster Care Recruitment Campaign across the Mid-West region. The aim of the campaign is to recruit new foster carers from all walks of life to meet the growing demand for placements in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary.

Ireland is among world leaders in foster care, and across Ireland 4,000* foster carers currently open their homes to 5,171* children. In 2022, 389 new foster carers joined Tusla, and 489 children entered foster care for the first time. However, this figure falls far short of the current need for foster care placements.

There are many types of foster care such as, short-term, long-term, emergency placements, respite fostering, and other supports for young people who need them. This means there is a choice of ways to foster, something to suit your skills, your life stage and your family dynamic. Tusla is seeking foster carers from all walks of life and communities across the Mid-West to help ensure young people can stay connected to their communities.

Speaking about the campaign, Dr Caroline Cullen, Regional Chief Officer Tusla Mid-West said: “Every year, hundreds of children and young people come into care, which means the need for new foster families continues to increase. Tusla foster carers provide a safe, secure and stable home environment for the most vulnerable in our society. We are looking for foster carers from all walks of life and cultures, including the Roma and Traveller communities. Ensuring that children can stay connected to their communities is vitally important and can provide stability to a young person when there are big changes happening around them. I would implore anyone interested in becoming a foster carer to join an information session on March 9, or visit fostering.ie for more information.

Tusla foster carers have positively transformed the lives of vulnerable children and young people, but more people are needed to meet the growing demand in the Mid-West region. A local placement will ensure a young person can maintain important connections with their friends, sports, school, and community, and reach their full potential.
