Portroe GAA launch a ‘Buy A Sod’ fundraiser to help develop playing facilities

Portroe GAA Club have launched a Buy a Sod fundraiser to help with the develop of new facilities at their club grounds.

In recent years the club bought new land on the Garrykennedy road adjoining the current grounds and plan to develop this to create an overall new facility for club members and supporters as well as the local community.

The development will be completed in a number of phases with phase one concentrating on extending and developing the main pitches and creating a walking track around the grounds for which they have received some funding for from the national Sports Capital Programme.

The new fundraiser which will be used to help pay for the new land and phase one of the development was launched in Seymour’s Bar on Saturday, February 18th last. The sods are being sold for €250 and every patron will be named on a large commemorative plaque prominently inside the club grounds. There will also be a memoriam section to remember those who have left us.

Club President Matt Shinners was on hand to buy the first sod and he spoke passionately about how the club had bought and developed the current grounds when the club had little finance and then went on to enhance the club facilities throughout the years.

Club Chairperson Tom Gallahue also spoke about Portroe parish and how they had always supported and developed so many projects down through the years and this development was for the community as well as the club. Development Committee members Alan Kelly and Brian Molony went through what was proposed in the development and how the fundraiser would work.

If anyone is interested in supporting this fundraiser, they can contact any of the club’s development committee which is chaired by Alan Kelly and whose membership is Brian Molony, Elaine Reidy, John Shinners, John Hogan, Philo Freeman, Colm Gleeson and Pat O’Connor.
