Tipperary awarded over €250,000 by Community Monuments Fund

The Graves of the Leinstermen site on the Arra Mountains above Portroe is to receive €1,283 as part of funding to 140 archaeological heritage projects throughout the country as part of the Department’s Community Monuments Fund for 2023.

A total of seven sites throughout Tipperary will benefit from the €256,000 fund allocated to the county.

The others are: €100,000 in funding for Kilnarath Church; €75,605 for Boolabaun Castle; €29,520 for Purcell’s Castle, Loughmore; €28,832 for Loughloher Castle/Tower House; €12,915 for the Monastic Site in Emly and €8,487 for Kilsheelan.

Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan said the core objective of the total funds of €8 allocated to sites nationwide was to support the conservation, maintenance, protection, and promotion of local monuments and historic sites, in alignment with the aims of the Government’s new heritage plan, Heritage Ireland 2030, and the Climate Change Sectoral Adaptation Plan.

The scheme contains a range of measures that seek to “enable conservation” to be carried out on archaeological monuments in need of urgent support, encourage access to these monuments and improve their presentation, and build resilience to enable these monuments to withstand the effects of climate change.
