Three Basketball final wins for Nenagh Warriors

The North Munster Underage Basketball Cup Finals took place last weekend at St Munchin’s College in Limerick with Nenagh Warriors winning three of the six finals they competed in.

Under 12 Boys Division 1 Final: Limerick Celtics 43-33 Nenagh Warriors

Nenagh Warriors played the current All-Ireland Club of the Year Limerick Celtics, but started well with a very good first quarter where they trailed by just one point with Lucas Lumanlan, Oskar Sosinski and Evan Jones to the fore. However, Celtics pushed on and stretched the lead to eight points at half time. Nenagh kept plugging away in a very even second half, including outstanding baskets from Jack Shinners and top scorer, Eugen Durnescu but the damage had already been done and Celtics went on to win by ten.

Under 12 Boys Division 2 Final:

Glen Cruisers Newport 17-16 Nenagh Warriors

Nenagh took a commanding early lead, with baskets from Cormac Malone and led all the way going into the final quarter. Warriors were unfortunately pipped at the final whistle, with a basket that should have been ruled out being allowed to stand, and with Newport sinking a free-throw after Nenagh had drawn level through a super Brian Ley finish. Cormac Malone was the game’s most valuable player while Paudie Dunne also impressed for the Warriors, who finished as league & cup runners-up.

The two teams were tied at the end of the first half at twenty points apiece. Issy O’Donoghue turned the corner for the Warriors in the third quarter before they took over in the final quarter, 13-0, to win by fifteen points. Anna Gleeson, Chloe Kingston, and Maebh Grennan Foley were to the fore for Nenagh, in what was a clinical and merciless final quarter from the Warriors.

This was a memorable result for the girls, who were also crowned North Munster League champions.

The Warriors never got going in this game.2For first three quarters they struggled despite having bucket loads of chances. The game was well gone at this stage but in the final quarter they started to get up to the speed of the game and showed great heart with Gustas Mazunas and Jack Hogan to the fore as Nenagh dominated the final quarter to make things far more respectable. Under 14 Girls Division 2 Final: Nenagh Warriors 59-10 Glen Cruisers Newport

Nenagh were the dominant force with outstanding performances here from Katie Shinners, Carly Walsh, and Maire Creagh.

The Warriors were in absolute control after the first quarter against a Newport side missing players and the advantage only continued to grow thereafter. This performance was a symbol of the girl’s outstanding season, where they sealed a League & Cup double, with an unbeaten record.

Squad: Katie Shinners, Carly Walsh, Lucy McNamara, Lucy Coonan, Lily Brennan, Maire Creagh, Lauren Grace, Roisin Nolan, Saoirse Kelly, Mia McKenna, Eimear Heenan, Ciara Mounsey, Natalie Griffin. Coach: Louise Mulcahy

Under 16 Girls Division 2 Final: Nenagh Warriors 37-36 Glen Cruisers Newport

The Nenagh team consisted almost entirely of the team that won the U14 Cup on Saturday, bar one girl, captain, Rhiannon Jones.

Newport were big and strong with the game going down to the final seconds with Nenagh winning by just one point. This was an outstanding performance with a lot of tired players. The crowd could barely watch on with the tension in the hall, with neither team deserving to lose what was one of the best finals in years.
