Roscrea Speakers Club news

Our last meeting on Thursday, April 13, was a very busy and enjoyable evening. We had three volunteer speeches from Edel Carey, Charles Hannon and Una Mooney.

Edel and Charles delivered their speeches via Zoom from their own homes and Una delivered her speech from our meeting room in Racket Hall Hotel, Roscrea. All speeches were from the respective project chosen by the speaker from their Toastmasters Pathways programme. In Toastmasters, each speech is then evaluated by a club member and feedback is given to the speaker. At our last meeting Charles Hannon, Sean Dwan and Tony Hoctor provided positive evaluations to the speaker assigned to them and offered suggestions on possible ways to improve for their next assignment. Meeting roles were fulfilled by Julie Murphy (toastmaster); Teresa Ryan Fehan completed the roll of grammarian. The grammarian’s role each night is to keep check on our efforts to eliminate or reduce what is termed crutch words or filler words as we speak. Operating our timer lights was Matt Burke and at the end of the meeting, Larry Lyons, delivered the general evaluator’s report. This report gives us feedback on how well our meeting was conducted and also any improvements we can make for future meetings. Our word of the night was ‘Diversity’ and with this, we are challenged to include this word as we speak and so we learn to structure what we say. Very interesting topics were provided for discussion by Alan Coffey and in this section we are challenged by the topicsmaster to speak on a given topic for two minutes without the chance to prepare our answer. This is always a very enjoyable and fun section of our meeting and by this we learn to think and speak at the same time. This is just another way that our club meetings challenge us and guide us to improve our speaking skills.

In Roscrea Speakers Club we are always striving to grow our membership and welcoming new members and guests. If you feel that our club can help you in your personal, social or working lives please feel free to join any of our meetings, either through Zoom from your own home or attend in person at our next meeting in Racket Hall Hotel, Roscrea.
