Dolla talk on Dr Andy Cooney
Silvermines Historical Society will host a talk on Dr Andy Cooney in The Eagles Nest, Dolla, this Friday, May 19, at 8pm.
Andy Cooney, Republican and medical doctor, was born on April 22, 1897 in Ballyphillip, Nenagh. During his medical studies in UCD he became involved in the War of Independence, and later took the Anti-Treaty side in the Civil War. He was appointed Chief of Staff of the IRA on the November 18, 1925 and held that position until October 1926.
One of his last public engagements in Ireland before leaving for America was to formally open the Paddy Ryan Lacken Park, Newport, on Sunday, May 21, 1950. Sean Gaynor introduced Cooney to the crowd and stated that he was a great soldier and a great leader, and, in his opinion, ranked with the patriot whose memory they were honouring that day.
The talk will be presented by Silvermines Historical member Cáit Logue. All are welcome and refreshments will be served afterwards.
