Protecting Barn Owls

Tipperary Co Council has been asked to run another scheme encouraging landowners to put up nesting boxes for Barn Owls.

Cllr Michael O'Meara is part of a project aimed at increasing Barn Owl numbers in Tipperary. He told the May meeting of Nenagh Municipal District that a pilot project carried out in Lorrha resulted in several boxes being installed for the owls.

Cllr O'Meara added that rodenticide is a "huge killer" of Barn Owls and he asked people to be mindful of this.

County Librarian Damien Dullaghan pointed out that Tipperary Co Council has advertised for the position of a Biodiversity Officer. He said he would draw the Barn Owl situation to the attention of the new officer.
