Newport native celebrates 100th birthday this Saturday
A WOMAN from Newport will celebrate her 100 years on Earth this Saturday, June 17.
Ellen O’Brien was born in Toor, Newport, in the parish of Ballinahinch on June 17 1923. Ellen was the second of three daughters born to Andrew and Annie O’Brien.
She attended Toor National School and later emigrated to America where she trained and worked as a nurse.
In 1989 Ellen retired and returned to Ireland, first spending eight years in the south of Tipperary in Mullinahone. Then in 1997 she moved to Nenagh, living in the Ormond Court estate.
She moved to the Sue Ryder House in the town in 2011 where she still lives to this day.
The celebrations kicked off earlier this week in the home where family and friends gathered to wish Ellen congratulations on her big birthday.
