Calls to bring forward Tipperary speed limit review

Calls were made at the June meeting of Tipperary Co Council to bring forward the next review of road speed limits.

Among several councillors to speak on the subject, Cllr John Carroll said the last speed limit review was carried out in 2017. There are a lot poorly-aligned roads with 80kmph speed limits and this needs to be revised downwards, he said.

Cllr Fiona Bonfield said the council needs to consult with gardaí on the matter. Signage and traffic calming measures would have little effect if the speed limits are not enforced, she said.

Director of Services Marcus O'Connor said the speed limits are normally reviewed every five years. The council has been advised to await the introduction of new national guidelines that may change the default speed limit on national secondary and local roads. A new 30kmph speed limit in all town centres is also proposed.

While he understood that there is frustration over the delay in changing the limit in some areas, Mr O'Connor said the new guidelines would be published in a matter of months.

The issue came up again at last week's meeting of Nenagh Municipal District. Cllr Bonfield said the 30kmph speed would not work if it is not enforced, or unless speed ramps or raised beds are introduced.
