Mawdsley glitters with Gold as National 400m champion

The stars of Tipperary athletics delivered a thrilling two day’s action at the National Senior Track & Field Championships at Morton Stadium last weekend.

There were over 650 athletes from all over the country vying for podium honours across the various events. 23 athletes from the Premier County competed all giving an excellent account of themselves across the track and field events claiming a total of seven medals with four gold, one silver and two bronze.

Sharlene Mawdsley from Newport AC was in brilliant form winning a Gold medal in the Ladies 400m in a very fast time of 51.94 seconds for her first national title in the distance and sets her up well for the World Championships in Budapest later this month.

Katie Bergin was in excellent form winning Gold for Moyne AC in the ladies 200m in a time of 24.60 seconds. This was Moyne AC first National title since the club was formed in 1948. Katie also competed in the 100m semi-final with a time of 12.32 seconds.

John Dwyer of Templemore AC also took hold in the Weight for Height 4.0m, silver in the Weight for Distance and won bronze in the Hammer with a distance of 50.40, finishing behind Moycarkey/Coolcroo’s Sean Mockler who won Gold in the Senior Hammer with a best throw of 64.49m. John Dwyer also finished seventh in the Shot Putt with a throw of 12.69 metres.

Grace Fitzgerald from Tipperary Town AC won bronze in the Senior Women’s Triple Jump with a distance of 11.25m.

Larry O’Grady - Mooreabbey Milers - 5th Senior Men’s Weigh for Height 2.90m.

Brendan Lynch - Nenagh Olympic AC - 7th Senior Men’s Triple Jump 13.04m.

Padraic Hassett - Nenagh Olympic AC - 8th Senior Men’s 200m 22.35s.

Jack Hickey - Nenagh Olympic AC - Men’s 200m - 23.89s; 100m - 11.55s.
