Lough Derg Sailors at Mirror World Championships

Lough Derg Yacht Club (LDYC) in Domineer carries out youth sailing every summer, sailing in Optimists, Toppers, and Mirrors, and this summer the sailors travelled to Greece and France for Optimist events and to Cork for the Topper event while Sligo was the venue for the Mirror World championships.

The Mirror is popular sailing dinghy, just 3.3 meters in length, with a distinctive red sail Two sailors helm and crew, sail the boat, it has two sails a main sheet and jib. What is exciting about the Mirror is that it has a spinnaker which can be hauled out to get the boat moving.

LDYC sailors travelled to Sligo with father and daughter David & Sarah Maher sailing together. David is the Mirror Class Captain in LDYC and with other parents and children braved the elements in tough conditions. Competitors came from UK, Australis, and South Africa to compete, with 52 boats competing. The Race Officers award was presented to Ryan O'Doherty and Joe Keane from LDYC for excellent seamanship.

Next week sees the LDYC main regatta taking place so come down to Domineer to see the boats competing for serious championship silverware. The main fleet is the Shannon One design (SOD) which has been raced on Lough Derg for over 100 years.
