New election candidate’s road safety concerns

An emerging candidate for the 2024 County Council election has called for improved safety measures to be considered for a section of the R503 Thurles to Limerick Road which is one of the busiest of its category in Tipperary.

James Collins, who runs his own plumbing and heating business, and is chairman of Newport GAA Club, has been selected as a Fianna Fáil candidate for the Local Authority Election in June 2024 for the Newport Local Electoral Area.

In a joint statement with Deputy Jackie Cahill (FF) he said: “I am pleased to be working with Deputy Jackie Cahill to try and improve road safety in the area of Kilcommon Cross. A number of locals have raised the desire for speed limits to be introduced around the cross.

“It doesn’t make sense that a vehicle could safely travel through Kilcommon Cross on the main road at 80km/hr and we are calling on the council to include this junction in the upcoming speed limit reviews across the county.”

Deputy Cahill added: “It has been brought to my attention by a number of locals in recent times that the speed of cars going through the cross is very dangerous with the amount of activity in this area. Kilcommon Cross is an extremely busy junction.”
