A walk in memory of Deirdre

Great community worker remembered

The friends of the late Deirdre Ryan from Hawthorns, Nenagh, have organised a fundraising event in her memory to be held on this Sunday, September 3, in Dromineer.

The 5km walk will take place along the beautiful setting of the shores of Lough Derg to honour Deirdre (54), who died in the prime of her life last December.

Deirdre was a member of numerous local groups, and among the many organisations she gave of her time to was the Suaimhneas Cancer Support Centre in Nenagh, which aids all those affected by cancer in a confidential environment.

The charity offers information and support at any stage from time of diagnosis, during treatment and beyond and this 5k event aims to raise funds to help Suaimhneas continue its valuable work in Deirdre’s memory.

The event organiser, Louise Morgan Walsh, is also calling on all the organisations which Deirdre was part of to come out and support and join the Ryan family and Deirdre’s friends at the Whiskey Still afterwards to share their memories and stories and to celebrate her achievements in life.

“Deirdre was an amazing friend and a pillar in our community, and she supported so many good local causes,” said Louise.

“Deirdre also previously worked with Concern in Nairobi and Dublin. She volunteered a lot of her time to Suaimhneas and was a member of the Dromineer Nenagh Literary Festival committee.

“She helped out with the A-Team, the youth club for those with autism, and played a huge part in the Christmas Tractors Nenagh parade and fundraising events in the run-up to Christmas in Nenagh.”

The event has the support of Deirdre’s five brothers, including Damian who is flying home from New Jersey to take part, and her wider family.
