Family fun day success in Birdhill

The annual Family Fun Day, which has been a popular feature of the calendar at Birdhill, lived up to its expectations, providing an afternoon of socialising and entertainment in bright sunshine.

Organised by Birdhill Tidy Village committee with emphasis on attractions for the younger members of the community, variety was there in plenty for both young and not so young to enjoy.

The event attracted a large gathering to the Village Community Park where throughout the afternoon for some it was the attraction of getting their face painted in a multi coloured style, while others competed in or watched participants in various side attractions.

There was Brett Fitzpatrick's popular and delicious BBQ style burgers, which proved a big attraction while the ice cream van operator experienced a queue waiting to sample the choice on offer throughout most of the afternoon.

The water race provided plenty of thrills and spills for the younger present, which proved challenging for the judges who kept a keen eye on the contestants.

The challenge for all competitors was to transfer the maximum amount of water from a tub of water to their individual glass over a distance of about 50 metres over a timed period using a spoon. It required a combination of a steady hand and speed, which was a challenge of balancing their act for all taking part against the essence to have the largest volume of water transferred to their glass under the judges eyes at all times. The contestants were grouped by age and the enthusiastic young people enjoyed the craic and the challenge.

For others, it was an afternoon of socialising, meeting their neighbours and friends and enjoying a ‘cuppa’ and some pastries in the beautiful surroundings on a lovely afternoon which had been a rare opportunity, throughout most of the summer this year.
