'No Pretty Women Ride Bicycles'

Ormond Historical Society talk in Nenagh

Did you know that the first women’s cycling club in Ireland was in Nenagh?

That in the 1890s there was widespread disapproval of women cycling? That the suffragettes seeking the vote for women met a hostile reception when they tried to hold their meetings in Nenagh in 1913? That the Nenagh Guardian was particularly hostile to their campaign? That several Nenagh women have made significant contributions to local and national life but have been overlooked by history?

Some militant suffragettes took to smashing windows in public buildings to draw attention to their demand for the right to vote.

These are just some of the issues and personalities that will be discussed in the Ormond Historical Society’s first talk of the 2023-24 season on Monday next, October 16, at the Abbey Court Hotel at 8pm.

The Talk is entitled 'No Pretty Women Ride Bicycles: Women’s Struggle for Equality and Freedom in Nenagh & District, 1880-1914'. The speaker is well-known local historian and author Danny Grace.

All are welcome to this lavishly illustrated power-point presentation of a neglected aspect of our local history.

John Redmond, the Home Rule Party leader, was one of many men opposed to granting the vote to women.
