Dragon and Flying Fifteens come to Lough Derg Yacht Club

No, it is not Halloween, but at Lough Derg Yacht Club in Dromineer, the Open Freshwater Keelboat Regatta took place.

46 boats took the journey from north, south, east, and west, as well as the UK arrived at Dromineer. Kevin Keogh Crane Hire lifted the boats in and out of the water. As well as the 46 visiting boats, 15 LDYC boats from the Squib class competed. Altogether 61 boats, crews and support teams competed, making Dromineer a busy village over the weekend. The were four classes in all, 7 Dragons, 10 flying 15’s, 10 SB20’s and 34 Squibs.

Liam Moloney and John Leech were the race officers as the fleets were divided in two. A large contingent of volunteers assisted with mark laying, recording of results, morning coffees and social evenings. Fantastic sailing took place on Friday and Saturday but on Sunday calm still waters made the regatta end early.

The Dragon fleet was won by Shawn Kingston, Donal Small & Conor Hemlock from Kinsale, The Flying Fifteens by Dermot Flaherty & Joe McDonagh from the Flying Fifteen Chonamara club the SB20’s by Matt Collins, Aiden McSweeney & Harry Pritchard from Royal Cork Yacht club. The Squib class was won by Ian Travers & Keith O’Riordan from Kinsale Yacht Club.

The Squib fleet at LDYC and in neighboring Iniscealthra Sailing Club (ICS) in Mountshannon, has grown to approximately forty boats.
