Lorrha & Dorrha Historical Society
Our local historian David Broderick will present the first talk of the Autumn/Winter Series of lectures.
David’s presentation, a talk and exhibition, is entitled, ‘From the Golden Age of Illustration to the Great War - the life and works of Thomas Butler Stoney (1885-1917)’. David will resurrect the stories of two Victorian artists, Thomas and Charles Butler Stoney, formerly of Portland Park, Lorrha.
David originally presented this during the Shorelines Art Festival in the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna to a packed audience, and now we are delighted to have this event in Lorrha. It will take place on this Friday, October 27, at 8pm in 'The Shed' at The Friar's Tavern (Eircode, E45 V651). Admission is €5 and no booking is required. Inquires to David, 086-3308172 or James, 087 2031798
On this Saturday, October 28, The Last Prince - O Sullivan Beare Living History Group will have a display and camp at The Friar’s Tavern from 11am to 1pm. From 2.30, the O'Sullivan group will walk from Ballymacegan to the River Shannon (car-pooling from Lorrha to Ballymacegan).
The group will then cross the River Shannon by boat. This should be a great afternoon, relaying the stories of the historic crossing of O'Sullivan Beare. This needs to be pre-booked as parking is limited. Phone 087-2031798.
On this Sunday, October 29, the O'Sullivan group will be back in Lorrha from 10am to 3pm to continue with their living history camp. Again, a great day is expected of chatting and talking about all aspects of that early 17th century period with many replicas of weapons and clothing, etc, on display.
The O'Sullivan Beare events are free, but donations are accepted on the day to cover costs.
