Hard Work pays off for Rovers Captain Slattery

By Liam Hogan

Shannon Rovers goalkeeper Aine Slattery made a fantastic save very early on in Sunday’s County Intermediate final and looked the part of an All-Star goalkeeper she is with her many high catches and deliveries during the course of the county final.

She was thrilled to be the winning captain just minutes after she delivered a thought-provoking and well-prepared winning speech which finished with the words “Bridesmaids no more”.

The fact that the side lost in the final in the last three years must have put some pressure on the team, but Aine admitted that the team trained very hard and were well prepared.

“I’m absolutely thrilled,” she began.

“We knew things were going right for us as we went in at half time. Moneygall have a super forward line, but our backline didn’t panic and played their own game.

We settled down at the break and said a few words and drove on to finish out the game.

“Jordan Donovan, our trainer, the work he has done as a trainer this year is absolutely outrages.

Since January and February, it’s been non-stop

. We knew we had to work on our fitness to get us through and it showed today.

“Look we have a fantastic team and the younger girls coming up are enjoying playing with the older players and likewise the older players are enjoying playing with the younger ones. Our supporters came out in great numbers and helped us.

Now we have a Munster championship game in two weeks so we will enjoy this moment while we can.”
