Rising Pro star Hill wins Nenagh Snooker Open

Aaron Hill, one of the rising stars of the professional game, was the winner of the 2023 Nenagh Snooker Open which took place last weekend.

The Cork man came through in the final against former champion Davy Morris from Kilkenny 5-4 in a fantastic final match. Hill trailed 3-1 at the mid-session interval, only to come roaring back to take four out of five frames to take the title for the first time.

Hill recently made the quarter finals of the Wuhan (China) Open, as well as the last 16 of the Northern Ireland Open held in Belfast last week. Hill has been coming to play in the Nenagh Open since he was a youngster and took the time out from his busy professional schedule to play, such is the respect he has for this tournament.

It was a great honour for Tomas Ryan to present the Dan Ryan Cup to Aaron Hill in memory of his late brother. It was quite an emotional presentation with a lot of respect shown to Tomas on Sunday night.

Defending champion, Nenagh’s own Brendan O’Donoghue, bowed out at the quarter final stage to the Ireland’s number one ranked player Ryan Cronin 4-3 in a great match.

There were also fantastic showings by Nenagh club members Mark & Noel Gleeson who reached the quarter final stage. Mark narrowly lost to Davy Morris 4-2, while Noel had a chance to beat Aaron Hill by going 2-0 up just to be pipped 4-3 in another quality battle.

Another rising national star, Robbie McGuigan from Northern Ireland (who also made the last 16 of the Northern Ireland Open) also took part. Despite making the highest break of the tournament (110) he bowed out against the legendary Rodney Goggins at the quarter final stage.

35 players entered the Nenagh Open with players and families staying in the town and availing of the local hospitality. A special thanks to Joe Mulqueen of Andy Flynn’s Gastropub for providing considerable hospitality.
