New Institute Snooker Club’s Brendan O’Donoghue bowed out at the quarter final stage of the World Amateur Championships in Qatar on Thursday.

The Irish champion fell to a five frame to three defeat to former professional Michael Georgiou from Cyprus, bringing to an end a fine campaign to finish eighth in the world.

Prior to that, O’Donoghue had defeated India’s Kamal Chawla 5-1 in the last 16 and Stuart Watson in the last 32.

O’Donoghue eased through the group stage winning all three matches dropping just one frame to opponents from Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, and Sri Lanka.
