Algae bloom on Lough Derg

Cllr Phyll Bugler has sought a report on the presence of harmful algae bloom on Lough Derg.

Speaking at the October meeting of Tipperary Co Council, she pointed out that the bloom is seen on the lake every summer. It was particularly prevalent last August. Cllr Bugler requested an EPA report on the matter and asked whether wastewater treatment plant capacity is a contributory factor.

Director of Services Eamon Lonergan said the problem is more to do with run-off of nitrates or phosphorus from the land. He said he would seek a report on the algae bloom in any event.
