Murphy will not run in elections

Speculation that the Nenagh-based community activist Brendan Murphy would contest next year’s local elections have been put to bed following his announcement that he will not be a candidate.

“I have never considered myself to be a politician,” Mr Murphy said in a statement issued to this newspaper.

He said he enjoyed the work he has been doing in the community over the last number of years. The  increase in time he has put into this work was driven by his love for Nenagh and a desire to help people.

“The political route, if I was successfully elected, would have given me a stronger platform to help make a difference, but it has certainly not held me back in any shape or form,” said Mr Murphy.

He added that his involvement in many local groups and events has allowed him to be a part of something really special. “This has reaffirmed my goal and purpose as a community volunteer and activist. It has also given me a sense of direction as to where I will realign my focus and energy going forward as I continue to remain active within the community.”

Recalling his unsuccessful run in the 2019 local elections, he said he knew only too well the challenges, pressures and stress that lie ahead for election candidates, and he had nothing but respect for anyone that puts their name on the ballot paper.

“My decision to not run in next year’s Local Election as an Independent was not an easy decision, but it is the right decision for me at this moment in time,” said Mr Murphy, who vowed to continue working in the community and thanked everyone for the support they have given him in that role.
