New plaques have been unveiled at the Nenagh War Memorial, inscribed with the names of 150 local war dead.

New plaques at Nenagh War Memorial

For several years, a discussion had been ongoing about remembering the Nenagh men who died in the World Wars by naming them on plaques at the War Memorial.

Years ago there would have been a resistance against this but happily times have changed.

Finally last year it was decided to try and raise the funds to honour their names. Morgan Murray Stoneworks offered to donate the stone for the plaques as long as the money could be found for the carving on what turned out to be five plaques.

Almost every business around the town of Nenagh and even further afield were approached and the response was overwhelming. There were also many individuals, some of whose relatives were the ones who died, who gave very generously. The organisers were amazed with the amount that was raised and want to say a huge thank you to one and all.

The carving of some 150 names on the plaques went ahead and were finally ready and erected around the War Memorial on Ashe Road in time for Remembrance Day in November.

The Rev Keith Barry and Fr Pat Gilbert officiated at the Act of Remembrance on Saturday, November 11; they blessed and dedicated the plaques in the presence of members of the Royal British Legion and ONE, and many members of the public.

We are so thankful and grateful that those men from the Nenagh area who gave their lives in two World Wars will now always be acknowledged and remembered.
