Frost puts the freeze on Nenagh

Limerick District League Review

The frost put paid to Nenagh AFC’s home fixture in the Limerick Premier League with Mungret Regional on Sunday morning although the ground had thawed sufficiently for the ‘B’ team to take on Corbally United.

This was Nenagh’s final game before the Christmas break on Sunday afternoon, a repeat of the divisional cup final last season, with Corbally also finishing just a point ahead of the Tipperary side when winning the league.

With tricky conditions underfoot the quality of football played was fantastic to see. Corbally had the better of the chances early on with the young Nenagh defence in fine form. The visitors took the lead through an own goal that produced plenty of debate as to whether it crossed the line or not.

Corbally doubled their lead in the second half through Rob Clancy with a well-executed set piece. Nenagh took over from this point and peppered the opposition goal. They were rewarded for their efforts when the ball found the feet of Diarmuid Fitzpatrick and the onrushing midfielder coolly slotted home.

Nenagh squandered multiple opportunities and it looked like it was going to be one of those days until Kieran O'Brien scored directly from a corner kick to give Nenagh a well-deserved point.

In the same division, Newport Town ‘B’ had no such luck in their game with Mungret Regional. Despite Jamie Kavanagh’s goal for Newport, Mungret came out tops by the odd goal in three.

In Division 3B, Lough Derg lost their spot at the top of the table when they fell 3-1 to Hill Celtic. Cian McCauley scored for the Tipperary side.
