Tipp GAA launch Club Coach Development programme

By Shane Brophy

Tipperary GAA have launched an ‘Athletic Development Scholarship’ to help clubs with developing their coaches.

This programme will see the county board subsidise a series of club workshops and coach development programmes, hosted by the world renowned Setanta College, based in Thurles.

“It aims to develop the massive potential of the club coaches within our county,” said Tipperary GAA CEO Murtagh Brennan.

“This is in keeping with our long-term objective to strengthen the clubs through the continuous professional development of their respective coaches. By improving coach education in the community, Tipperary GAA hopes to minimise the financial costs often associated with seeking qualified coaches at club level.”

The twelve-week course, which is due to begin in mid-January, will see lectures delivered through Setanta College’s online learning platform, and will cover three primary areas encompassing theoretical aspects, practical coaching, and programme management. It will cover topics such as fitness texting, resistance training, strength & power, human anatomy, speed training, endurance conditioning, training methods & monitoring, and age & gender-related programme design and periodisation.

On the completion of the course which will come with a Certificate in Applies Athletic Performance, the student will display knowledge and understanding of key related aspects and principles of training and designing and implementing programmes of development for team and individual athletes. They will also display knowledge and skills related to monitoring, management and review of team and individual development.

“The launch of the ‘Tipp GAA Athletic Development Scholarship’ will represent a real commitment from the County Board to support clubs in terms of developing their coaches,” added Murtagh Brennan, who trained his native Loughmore/Castleiney to the county senior hurling & football championship double in 2021.
