Newport and Nenagh ease relegation worries

Limerick District League Review

PREMIER DIVISION

NEWPORT TOWN 5-0 GERALDINES

The two promoted sides from last season met in Newport on Sunday when the home side ran in five goals without reply against Geraldines.

The opening 45 minutes failed to separate the sides, however things changed after the break with Newport running riot. Ten minutes in, a ‘Dines clearance fell short to Brian O’Sullivan who from the right of the area curled a beauty to the back of the net.

Minutes later, things got better for Newport when Conor Brett set up Darren Collins to double their account. Newport made sure of victory when Christy Doyle was on hand to finish from close range and five minutes from time, Elliot Slattery made it 4-0. Jay Ryan completed the scoring to secure a solid win for Newport.

Newport Town: Harry Ryan; Joe Shanahan, Christy O'Connor, Drew McLean, Pa Murtagh, Peter O'Sullivan, Darren Collins, Cillian O'Shea, Brian O'Sullivan, Conor Brett, Christy Doyle. Subs: Daniel Ryan, Luke Ryan, Jay Ryan, Elliot Slattery, Killian O'Malley.

Coonagh United 1-1 Nenagh AFC

While the race for the Limerick District League premier division sees four teams tied at the top of the table, at the other end it's a case of as you were after the weekend results.

Charleville's defeat to Regional on Saturday evening pins them to the foot of the table on three points.

Just above them, Nenagh AFC and Coonagh United were just two points better off when the sides took the field on Sunday morning in Coonagh.

The Tipperary sides' hopes were not helped when they had to play the opening 75 minutes with just ten players. They paid the price after just three minutes when Ger Myles netted for the home side.

Nenagh were back to numerical parity on fifteen minutes from time and scored a vital equaliser when Ryan Gilmartin slotted home a penalty kick with six minutes remaining to earn a crucial point.

Nenagh AFC: Aaron Savage; Dan Ryan, Kieran Barr, Eoin Coffey, Conor McCormack, Adam Ryan, Eamon White, Cillian Scully, Kieran O'Brien, Declan O'Meara, Ryan Gilmartin. Sub: Daire Hogan.

Open Cup

Dan Fogarty scored for Lough Derg who fell 4-1 to Geraldines ‘B’ in the first round of the Open Cup.

Mungret Regional ‘D’ were 2-0 winners over Newport Town ‘B’, thanks to goals from Danny Galvin and Alan Finucane.

Youths

Lough Derg did have better luck in the Under 17 Division 1 League when they defeated Fairview Rangers 2-1 to record a memorable win. Matthew Ryan and David Goode scored for the winners.

In the Division 2, Nenagh AFC proved much too strong for a young Regional United outfit winning by double digits. Daniel Connolly scored five, Ryan Clifford scored four while two from Mark Manly and one apiece from Charlie Moran and Brian Tracey made up the tally.
