Upheaval in Terryglass, Kilbarron and Finnoe

On Friday, March 8, Kilbarron Terryglass Historical Society will host a talk by James Heenan, Lorrhalore, historian, researcher and guide.

James will examine societal transformation through land ownership and the progression of religion in the parishes of Terryglass, Kilbarron and Finnoe (c 1580 - 1680). This talk will appeal to anyone interested land ownership during this period in Ireland

By the end of the Elizabethan period, Gaelic land tenures in this area were mostly under English laws. However, society in North Tipperary continued in traditional Gaelic fashion with little repercussions for Catholicism.

Plantation and recusancy laws threatened and loomed, but society remained mainly unscathed until the outbreak of the Confederate and Cromwellian wars. The aftermath resulted in a widespread upheaval of traditional society – new elite landowners leading to the final destruction of Gaelic Ireland.

This study will trace these changes in Kilbarron, Terryglass and Finnoe through various contemporary sources. The talk will take place in Terryglass Hall at 8pm. Admission: €5.
