Tipperary Under 20 and Minor Hurling panels announced

Tipperary under 20 and minor hurling managers Brendan Cummins and James Woodlock have named 37-player squads for their upcoming Munster Championship campaigns.

By Shane Brophy

The minor hurlers are first into action on Thursday 4th April at home to Cork as they look to improve on last year’s campaign where they failed to make the knockout stages, winning just one of their four games.

There are ten players still eligible from 2023 including Eoin Doughan and Austin Duff who played key roles in Nenagh CBS’ Dean Ryan & Harty Cup successes. The team will be captained by Holycross/Ballycahill’s Cathal O’Reilly and in Durlas Og’s Euan Murray have one of the rising talents in the country.

The panel also contains the sons of current Tipperary senior manager Liam Cahill and under 20 manager Brendan Cummins with Jack Cahill of Ballingarry and Paul Cummins of Ballybacon/Grange following in the footsteps of their parents who were also noted underage players in their day.

This year’s minor championship format has changed slightly where after the round-robin section, the top two teams will progress to the final as normal, with the winner progressing to the All-Ireland semi-final and the loser to the quarter finals, where they will be joined by their corresponding teams from Leinster. The change sees the third and fourth placed teams in both provinces also progressing to the All-Ireland series where they will play two preliminary quarter finals with the winners progressing to quarter finals against the provincial runners-up. The All-Ireland Final is scheduled for the last weekend in June.

Under 20

Brendan Cummins under 20 hurlers don’t enter the Munster Championship until round 2 and will start on Friday 12th April away to Limerick. Captain Ben Currivan is one of eleven survivors from the 2023 panel that finished second in the round-robin with two wins and a draw from their four games, before losing in a semi-final at home to Clare.

There will be a lot of focus on this Tipperary team as there was much criticism of the style of play last year, particularly their lack of direct hurling but with 2022 All-Ireland minor winning players Adam Daly, Paddy McCormack and Darragh McCarthy leading the attack, getting them the ball will be key to how they succeed.

The under 20 championship format remains unchanged with the top team at the end of the round-robin format progressing to the final with the second placed team hosting the third placed team in a semi-final. The provincial champion progresses to an All-Ireland Final against the Leinster champion which is scheduled for the June Bank Holiday weekend.
