Transition Year students were presented with certificates by Sally McHugh, Ford of the Kings, having completed a three-day coding workshop.

Busy times at Portumna Community School

Coding TY students

Our Transition Year girls received their certificates after completing a three-day coding workshop called Codeplus. Many thanks to facilitator Sally McHugh at Fordofthekings. The workshop, funded by Science Foundation Ireland and delivered by University of Galway, aims to promote and encourage more girls to consider computer science on their CAO for third level and future career choices. Presently, only 18% of graduates in this area are women. The girls explored three different coding platforms namely Scratch, Python, and Microbits.

UCD Entrance Scholars

UCD Entrance Scholars are First Year students recognised for their academic achievement who have achieved 560 points or more in their Leaving Certificate (or equivalent second-level examination). These awards are part of a range of UCD initiatives put in place to recognise exceptional students when they join, as well as those who develop their talents while studying at UCD.

Junk Kouture

Portumna Community School have secured their place in this year’s Regional Final of the Junk Kouture competition. Fairground Contraption was created by Transition Year student Clara Normington. This haute couture creation is a celebration of the fun and colour of a festival but it also highlights the aftermath of these events and the impact they can have on the environment. Clara’s outfit is constructed from various discarded tents, an old lamp shade and lots of felt and wire poles. Taking to one of Ireland’s most prestigious stages, Portumna Community School will face competition from over 80 other entries from across the country at the Helix, Dublin this week.

Basketball

A busy week on the courts for PCS basketball with four teams - First and Second Year girls and boys in action. Thanks to all trainers Emma Byrne, Caroline Casey Niamh Byrne, Martin Tuohy and our TY volunteers Tom, Eoghan, Leah, Derbhail, Cliodhna and Emma.

Chamber Choir

Our Chamber Choir competed at the Interschools Music Festival on March 1 in Wesley College, Dublin. The PCS chamber choir placed fourth amongst thirteen schools overall. Competing at the senior level is a remarkable achievement for our school, thanks to the dedication of our talented students and the leadership of Ms Brogan, Head of Music.
