Funding welcomed for Carrig village

Local representatives have welcomed the announcement of funding for a new recreation park in Carrig village.

Minister for Community and Rural Development Heather Humphreys this week announced €176,099 for Carrig under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

Local councillor Michael O'Meara said the funding would be used to create a “recreation park and wildlife haven” in the village. The project would include provision of a pedestrian access bridge over the Carrig river.

“This is a really worthwhile project, which will add character and charm to the locality,” said Cllr O'Meara, who praised the local committee in putting in a very strong application in response to the expressions of interest sought by Tipperary Co Council. Cllr O'Meara said he liaised with the committee and Deputy Michael Lowry on the matter.

The council's roads engineer visited the green site, which is located on the N52. Cllr O'Meara looked forward to the plan progressing towards providing a biodiversity garden in the village.

The Fianna Fáil TD for North Tipperary, Jackie Cahill and the Fianna Fáil Local Election Candidate for the Nenagh, Borrisokane and Lower Ormond LEA, Ryan O’Meara, also welcomed the funding.

“I would like to thank Minister Heather Humphreys for her work on this project, as well as her officials within her Department,” Deputy Cahill stated. “This funding is proof of this Government’s commitment to rural Ireland and to the regeneration and enhancement of our facilities locally.”

Ryan O'Meara said: “I would like to congratulate the Carrig Village Tidy Towns committee for their hard work on this project and for submitting such a strong, professional and impressive application. This group does incredible work locally and takes great pride in their area, which is a credit to them.

“This funding, which Minister Humphreys has announced, will further enhance Carrig village and will provide excellent facilities by way of the recreation park and wildlife haven, combined with the new pedestrian river crossing.”
