Grammy award winner returns

Four-time Grammy award winner, Dirk Powell, returns to Tipperary on Sunday, June 9, to perform at Nenagh Arts Centre with Amelia Powell and the incredible new Irish duo, The OARS. The OARS is an exciting contemporary folk duo, featuring renowned multi-instrumentalist (and Nenagh native), Brian Morrissey and critically acclaimed singer/songwriter and guitarist Eoin Coughlan. This promises to be a fantastic night of Cajun and Louisiana flair, coupled with high octane traditional Irish and folk music.

Brian Morrissey’s banjo and bodhrán playing is championed world-wide and he has featured on over forty albums to date. Eoin Coughlan is a phenomenal songwriter and musician with numerous film and television credits to his name and has performed on some of the great stages at festivals around the world. Dirk and Amelia Powell are a father-daughter duo from Southwest Louisiana, blending traditional and original music inspired by their family’s musical legacy. Dirk, known for his multi-instrumental virtuosity and Grammy winning collaborations and Amelia, influenced by her Cajun fiddle legend grandfather, create soulful and authentic music.

The OARS travelled to Louisiana last October to record their debut album in Dirk’s studio. Under his expert guidance as producer, and with stunning backing vocals and guest instrumentals from both Dirk and Amelia they have created something truly unique. Their self-titled album ‘The OARS’, has been gaining extensive radio play at home and abroad, featuring on the RTE Radio 1 Recommends List, BBC Radio Ulster and KVRS in Louisiana, to name but a few.

Dirk Powell is a multi-Grammy winning musician, writer, producer, composer, studio owner, and engineer. His Kentucky roots and commitment to the Creole and Cajun culture in the Southwest Louisiana that he calls home, have fused with early classical training to form an artistic palette and vision that are unique in today’s musical environment.

Amelia Powell grew up in the bayous of Louisiana, immersed in the musical culture of her grandfather, Cajun fiddle hero Dewey Balfa. Her driving guitar and soulful vocals, as both a lead and harmony singer, are in demand throughout Cajun country and beyond. She has toured internationally since her teenage years.

Eoin Coughlan, as part of the hugely successful group NOMOS, the lead vocalist/multi-instrumentalist and songwriter found himself touring extensively around the world playing alongside the likes of Emmylou Harris, Billy Bragg, Nancy Griffiths and Baaba Maal on some of the world’s main stages.
