Tipp shows its solidarity with Palestine

A RANGE of activities have been held by the newly formed North Tipperary Irish Palestine Solidarity campaign (NTIPCS) recently, including a live Zoom talk with a journalist and human rights worker from Hebron in the West Bank, Badee Dwaik. The talk was organsied by Saranne Hogan of Nenagh, who now works in the UAE. Hogan had been to Hebron where she met Dwaik.

Dwaik, who visited Ireland previously, outlined the huge increase in restrictions to daily life which has occurred since October 7, in Hebron and elsewhere.

A massive increase in roadblocks and checkpoints, in detentions without trial, and in torture in detention was outlined. Before October 7 there were 5,500 people held in administrative detention (military detention without trial); now there are 9,500, he said.

Dwaik’s own children have been abducted and held in this manner, he told the attendees. Travel permits for essential medical treatment are now much harder to get, civil service wages have extra taxes applied now, work permits are cancelled for many tens of thousands of Palestinians in Israel.

All barriers to Palestinian people interacting with each other and having anything like citizenship are increased.

He has been arrested 22 times for his scholarly and human rights work. He adds: “I’m 51, and this is the worse situation yet. People in their 70s say the same.”

This is just one of the activities organised by NTIPCS, which also include the Banners over Bridges action on May Bank Holiday, and the ongoing Hunger for Justice campaign. This latter involves daily 24 hour fasts by a sequence of local people to the Nenagh and North Tipperary region, to spotlight the plight of Palestinian people - in Gaza in particular - at this time.
