MATCH DIGEST

Player of the Match: Jenny Grace (Tipperary)

SCORERS – Tyrone: Roisin McErlean 0-6 (2 frees, 2 45s); Roisin O’Neill McKee 1-0; Samantha McKillen, Lara Devlin 0-1 each.

Tipperary: Jenny Grace 0-10 (5 frees); Sinead Meagher 0-7; Ciara Brennan, Laura Shinners 0-3 each; Amy Quinlisk 1-0; Anna Fahie, Emma Flanagan, Jill-Anne Quirke, Eva O’Dwyer 0-1 each.

After their resounding win over Down in round 1, Tipperary were equally dominant against Tyrone. Ciara Brennan scored Tipperary’s first score with an early point while Roisin McErlean pointed a 45 to get Tyrone off the mark.

This was followed by the first of Jenny Grace’s ten points in the game. In a trademark Grace performance, she was excellent throughout; brilliant on the ball with superb distribution while also hitting five points from play; a constant thorn in the Tyrone rear-guard.

Sinead Meagher was another player who had her eye in, hitting seven points from play. In the early stages, Tipperary were already the sharper in front of goal and a missed penalty from Tyrone didn’t help their cause. Roisin McErlean had her second point before Tipperary shot six unanswered points thanks to Jenney Grace (4) and captain Meagher (2).

Tyrone needed a score to stop the onslaught and it came in the form of a goal from Roisin O’Neill McKee after a fine delivery from Lara Devlin. Again, Roisin McErlean was on target for Tyrone to make it 1-3 to 0-9.

Tipperary finished the half really strongly powering past the Tyrone defence to score 1-6 without reply to leave the half time score, 1-15 to 1-3, the points coming from Ciara Brennan & Sinead Meagher (2), Jenny Grace, and Emma Flanagan with the goal coming from Amy Quinlisk.

The deficit could have been a lot smaller only for three brilliant saves from Laura Leenane in quick succession along with some excellent defending by Lorna Ryan.

Just like the first half, Ciara Brennan got the opening score after the restart. Bill Mullaney’s side were in flying form, especially in front of goal and further points from Grace, Quinlisk, Jill-Anne Quirke, Eva O’Dwyer and Laura Shinners extended their lead.

A Samantha McKillen point stopped the Tipperary onslaught while Roisin McErlean pointed a 45 after Lara Devlin’s effort was saved. McErlean pointed another free, but Tipperary then hit another four points in a row through Sinead Meagher and Laura Shinners.

Tyrone had the final say with a Lara Devlin point after a good pass from Róise Kerr.
